In 1591, Date Masamune moved from Yamagata to the current site due to Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s policy. Date renamed the place from Iwadesawa to Iwadeyama, and built his castle. The castle is now served as a park for people to visit and relax.

The castle of young Masamune

The castle in Muromachi period was called Iwadesawa, the place for Ujiie family, who served for the Osaki Lord. However, the castle was lost after a fire. It was repaired by Masamune, who renamed the castle as Iwadeyama castle in 1591. Before moved to Sendai in 1603, Masamune spent 12 years in the castle. Later, the fourth son of Masamune (Muneyasu) became the new lord of the 15000 people town of Iwadeyama . Nowadays, there are earth base and tunnels left in the ruin.
